Museums often contain many items of artwork including paintings, sculptures and other types of collections. The most valuable works are often paintings. Some of the paintings are in fact extremely valuable and expensive and have increased in value over the years. Here we describe a few of the most expensive pieces of art in museums today.

The Most Well Known

The “Mona Lisa” painting is one of the most famous and most expensive pieces of art in the world. It was valued in 2016, at about $620 million. This painting can be seen in the Louvre Museum in Paris. It is a classic, if you can make it to see this piece then you most definitely must. It may not be worth what it is valued out, but it is worth to see.

The painting “Starry Night” by Vincent van Gogh is in the New York Museum of Modern Art. Since Vincent van Gogh paintings generally sell for way over $30 million it is safe to say that “Starry Night” is a most expensive piece of art. Another Vincent van Gogh painting that is very expensive is the painting that is named “Irises”. This work is worth an estimated $109 million and is housed at the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” is worth over $82 million today and you can view this work at the National Gallery of London.

Lesser Known Works

An expensive painting that can be viewed at the Getty Center in Los Angeles is “Portrait of Alfonso d’Avalos, Marquis of Vasto, in Armor with a Page” by Titian. This work has a value of about $88 million.

Many of the works of Claude Monet, another impressionist master, have sold for millions of dollars. One of these famous works is the1919 painting the “Water lilies” which is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York. Monet completed several paintings of water lilies over the years and they are all very valuable pieces of work today.

Pablo Picasso is another great artist who produced paintings that are very valuable and expensive today. One of his paintings, “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” is valued at over $113 million. A person can see this painting during a visit to the Tate Modern Museum in London. Although apparently, privately owned, it has been on a long-term loan to the Tate Museum.

The painting “Painting Flag” by Jasper Jones is at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This painting is very expensive, valued just over $118 million. Peter Paul Reubens painting, “Massacre of the Innocents” is valued at over $90 million. This painting can be seen at the Art Gallery in Ontario in Canada where it is on display to the public. Many pieces of expensive art are privately owned and not on display to the public, but luckily some pieces are at museums and can be seen by the public so that we can all appreciate their worth.
