All about Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty museum, shorty referred to as the Getty was opened in 2006 after undergoing a major renovation. It is situated in California and it composed of two locations: Getty Center and Getty Villa. Getty Center is located in Brentwood, north from Los Angeles and it features art work from Middle Ages to the present. Getty Villa is the second location of the museum and it features works from Ancient times to the present. The museum was first opened by J. Paul Getty in 1974 as a re-creation of a historical property from Herculaneum. The museum became the richest in the world when it receiver 1.2 billion US dollars in 1982. The following year the museum purchased many works from struggling European museum and added them to their permanent exhibition. In 1997 the museum moved to the present main location, Brentwood. The former location became known as the Getty Villa.

The museum is one of the popular in the region and has more than 1.7 million tourists every year. During the 70’s and 80’s there was a huge controversy in the art world around the authenticity of some of the works in the museum. The former curator resigned after the controversy and he was later charged of trafficking antiquities and national treasures of some countries. This scandal didn’t do a lot of damage to the increasing popularity of the museum. Following this scandal, Italy and Greece pressed charges against Getty Museum for holding national treasures that were stolen from their countries during the 70’s and 80’s. The allegations were finally over when the Italian government decided to step in and Getty museum returned some of the precious works. The remaining collection of the Getty museum is still one of the most impressing in the world.

They even opened an educational canter dedicated to study and appreciation regarding these precious works. This center is one of the few in the world that is open to the public and help regular people get a better understanding of the history of art. The museum is considered very family-friendly and allows history and art to be an interest for everyone, no matter the age. The permanent exhibition features more than 1000 pieces that date from Antiquity to modern times. Besides paintings, Getty museum also features sculptures, furniture, drawings, statues, manuscripts, photographs and many more. It is truly a place that has something to offer to anybody. The museum is also dedicated to restoration and preservation and has many classes and dedicated events on these subjects. Even with the past scandals, Getty museum struggles to preserve international art in order to display it for the next generations. This multitasking museum is well-known for the educational purpose and for their restoration projects. Many of the rare and fragile works are only displayed occasionally in order to better preserve them.

Getty museum remains one of the most popular museums in the US and it is the place that has something to offer to everybody.
